Indian and Maori Cultural Briefing in Sunshine Coast

ECCQ Multicultural Partners hosted a successful cultural briefing session at the Millwell Road Community Centre in Maroochydore, focusing on Indian and Māori cultures.

Multicultural Partners Thana Roysmith and Rhee Duthie delivered this open session, designed for professionals in Health, Aged, and Community Care sectors, drew participants from Fraser Coast, Sunshine Coast and North Brisbane.

The turnout and engagement were highly positive, with participants appreciating insights into service delivery, customs, communication, and key aspects of daily life in these cultures. Service providers mentioned that the cultural briefings were beneficial as it helped them to understand their clients from these cultures to be able to provide a culturally appropriate and sensitive service. Participants also got to taste and enjoy Indian and Maori cuisine for morning tea.

“I have just begun working with some Hindi [speaking] clients and this briefing has helped me tremendously”, said one of the participants. “It surprised me how Māori and Indian cultures shared a lot in common, then I learnt that they are both Collectivist cultures and that made sense. I wish all our aged care team could’ve attended”, added another attendee.

This initiative highlights our commitment to enhancing cultural competence within diverse service sectors. If you are interested in bringing this training to your organisation, reach out to us at multiculturalpartners@eccq.com.au
