A newly released Queensland Health report has revealed an alarming increase in notifications for HIV, gonorrhoea, and infectious syphilis. The Notifications of bloodborne viruses and sexually transmissible infections (BBVSTIs) in Queensland report for 2024 shows a more than 20% increase in cases compared to the previous five-year average.
The data highlights that young people are disproportionately affected. Of the 156 new HIV notifications, 63% were among people aged 20 to 39. This same age group also accounted for the majority of gonorrhoea (68% of 8,274 notifications) and infectious syphilis (63% of 1,459 notifications) cases.
The Metro South Hospital and Health Service (HHS) recorded the highest number of cases, followed by Metro North HHS and the Gold Coast. Notably, Metro South and Metro North HHS shared the highest number of infectious syphilis cases (n=350 each).
These infections are preventable. Key prevention methods include:
