Navigating the Australian Education System and University Admissions

ECCQ worked closely with Jesus Gate of Peace Ministries to conduct two sessions on the Australian education system and university admissions. The first workshop focused on the various stages of education, from childcare, primary, to secondary school. Participants learned about long day care, family day care, and the free Kindergarten program available before starting Prep. The session also covered eligibility criteria and financial support options like the childcare subsidy.

Parents gained a deeper understanding of types of schools (state and private), and primary and secondary education pathways, including the structure of prep to year 4 (early years) and years 5-6 (middle years). learning areas and information on transitioning to secondary school, including bridging years (7-10) and senior school (11-12), was provided, with a focus on working towards the Australian tertiary admission rank (ATAR) for university entry. Additional resources for English as an additional language or dialect students were also discussed. Participants were introduced to vocational education and training (VET) options, including traineeships and apprenticeships, which allow students to earn while learning, along with pathways to higher education.

The second session focused on the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC), where participants learned about the university application process. The workshop also emphasised that university may not be the right choice for every student, and alternatives like TAFE and trade qualifications can also be considered. Lastly, the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) was introduced, which provides adjustments for students facing challenges beyond students control for example home environment and responsibility, financial hardship, English language difficulties, personal illness or disability, and school environment.

Parents now have the tools to navigate the system confidently from early childhood education to higher education and to make informed decisions and explore alternatives such as vocational training when needed.  Parents left with a better understanding of how to support their children in choosing the right educational and career pathway. They also gained clarity on QTAC’s processes and the importance of preparation for eligibility requirements and application deadlines.
