World Diabetes Day on 14 November is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin in 1921. Currently, 537 million people worldwide live with diabetes, with close to 50% still going undiagnosed. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2024-2026, “For a Better Diabetes Life,” seeks to improve the daily lives and overall well-being of those living with the condition.
Millions of people with diabetes face daily challenges managing their condition at home, work, and school. They must be resilient, organised, and responsible, impacting both their physical and mental well-being. Diabetes care often focuses only on blood sugar, leaving many overwhelmed. The next three years aim to push toward better diabetes management, prevention, early intervention, and a holistic approach to care. This is vital not only for improving health outcomes and well-being but also for giving individuals the chance to live well.
The ECCQ Chronic Disease Program educates multicultural community members surrounding diabetes, risks and self-management along with improving overall health and wellbeing. The team of trained multicultural health workers deliver free education in language at places and times suitable for the communities across Queensland.
