Raising awareness of viral hepatitis

Raising awareness of viral hepatitis

The latest national viral hepatitis B mapping project report highlights Queensland’s lag behind other states in hepatitis B diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment, with rates of 72%, 21%, and 10%, respectively.

Chronic hepatitis B disproportionately affects people born overseas, constituting around 70% of those living with the condition in Australia. Due to its asymptomatic nature, many individuals are unaware of their infection. Furthermore, the majority of people living with chronic hepatitis B do not receive regular monitoring as recommended, and some people who are required treatment are not on treatment yet. Tragically, 453 deaths in 2021 were attributed to chronic hepatitis B.

To increase awareness of viral hepatitis, we have organised various community activities around World Hepatitis Day on July 28, 2023. These activities include information stalls at Sunnybank Plaza and Inala Market Square, social media posters, ethnic media advertisements, face-to-face educational sessions, and radio interviews.

Stigma remains a significant obstacle for people seeking testing and care for hepatitis B. However, we were incredibly proud of a Vietnamese woman living with chronic hepatitis B who took the initiative to reach out to our staff. She requested us to post her video to raise awareness about hepatitis B within her community. This brave act not only helps break the barriers of stigma but also empowers others to take charge of their health and seek support. If you are interested in her video, please watch it here https://eccq.com.au/what-we-do/health/bbv/bbv-vietnamese/bbv-sti-videos-tieng-viet/ . Please note the video is in Vietnamese. English subtitle will be available in the future.
