On Day 2 of the conference, Hyatt Nash, Program Officer at ECCQ’s Chronic Disease Team, presented “The Eye Of The Storm: Building Disaster Resilience within Brisbane’s CALD communities”, showcasing the program’s work on supporting multicultural communities to be more resilient and prepared when it comes to natural disasters.
Over three years, the project funded by Brisbane City Council included in-language focus groups that explored topics such as preparedness, what disaster means for multicultural communities, barriers, trust in services, among others, as well as in-language education sessions delivered by our bicultural/bilingual workers, and the development of translated resources.
The presentation was part of the session “No Planet B: Building Climate Resilience in Diverse Communities”, in which the discussions were around the need to educate and support communities with tools that will help them be safe in natural disasters, with a focus on preparedness and prevention, rather than just repair.
Carole Chow, SWSLHD Multicultural Services, Dr Lai Heng Foong, Bankstown Lidcombe Hospital, Conjoint Senior Lecturer, University of NSW and Western Sydney University, Kaye Graves and Nido Taveesupmai, Bendigo Community Health Services, were also part of this important conversation.
