ECCQ teams worked together to bring visitors to Berlasco to enjoy a Seniors Month celebration with residents. Members of the Vietnamese community joined Berlasco’s residents, and Diversicare social support groups in the Girraween Room on 16 October. Lisa Ward opened the event with a warm welcome, then the duo from ‘Music Wonderland’ led a fun music activity in English and Vietnamese. Singing together transcended cultures and created a sense of unity for residents and visitors from a diversity of backgrounds.
Being in the beautiful Berlasco building, making music, mingling, and eating together also helped reduce some of fears in the community about ‘nursing homes’. The visitors had the opportunity to ask residents about their experiences living in an aged care residence and they were given a positive impression.
COTA Queensland sponsored PICAC (Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care) to organise the event for Seniors Month which is celebrated every October. PICAC were supported by the Diversicare Activities team who set up a photo booth with zany costumes, and Berlasco staff provided support at all levels and a luscious cake. Vietnamese Community in Australia (Queensland Chapter) Inc. also provided valuable support including catering and transport.
