The Hepatitis, HIV/AIDS and Sexual Health Program at ECCQ hosted a Community Forum in celebration of World AIDS Day. The Forum was held at the Acacia Ridge Souths Sports Club and was attended by over 50 people from 17 different ethnic communities.
Alton Budd the Chairman of the ECCQ Board opened the Forum with an acknowledgement of country and welcomed all to the days’ events. Isreal Paluku from the Congolese Community was Master of Ceremonies. Speakers included Program Manager Zhihong Gu who provided an update on HIV and STIs in Queensland, Johann De Joodt who talked about his personal experience living with HIV, and Tiko from Queensland Positive Peoples Program who provided information about the Community–led services for People Living with HIV in Queensland. This was followed by a discussion with speakers.
A quiz was undertaken and the results were provided which helped to identify the gaps in the knowledge of the attendees regarding HIV and STIs. We were very fortunate to have Dr Julian Langton-Lockton the Clinical Director of the Sexual Health and HIV Service in Metro North present on HIV and STI testing, treatment and prevention which resulted in many questions from the audience.
Peter Last the CEO of ECCQ closed the event and following lunch there was much discussion and networking within the many and varied communities who attended. This event showcased ECCQ’s role in engaging and educating the community regarding HIV and the advocacy services provided by ECCQ.
Thank you to all the speakers, the Board Members and CEO of ECCQ and the dedicated staff of the BBV and STIs Program team for another great event.
