ECCQ calls for communities to support each other

The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Queensland (ECCQ) stand with our Chinese communities and denounces rising discrimination tied to the coronavirus.

ECCQ’s Chairperson Alton Budd said racism and anti-Asian behaviour has increased since the outbreak of the coronavirus.

“We have heard stories of Chinese community members being harassed when simply taking public transport.

“We urge everyone to not tolerate this abhorrent behaviour and to stand up and offer support if they witness an act of racism.

“We stand with the Queensland Government’s message to remain calm and heed all advice from Queensland Health. There is no public health reason for people to stop their daily activities.

“ECCQ will offer support to all communities and assist with disseminating accurate health information.

“ECCQ commends the Queensland Government for investigating instances of racial vilification.

“We also offer our support to community members who are directly or indirectly affected by the coronavirus and encourage all to support one another.”
